1. Only work with or consider reliable firms. Reliable firms will ensure that the budget is met, it is completed during the specified time, and most importantly that the material used is of the best quality.

2. Ask for referrals ensures that this firm is reliable and has worked on prior projects, and those projected were completed successfully without any major predicaments.

3. Avoid choosing a contractor based only on pricing needs. Majority of contractors are willing to work with their clients in order to meet their budget. However, searching for low prices, will not ensure you the best quality. Search for the best quality and the price will be well-worth it for the amount of quality work put into the project.

4. Subsequent to choosing a contractor which you believe provides quality work, and meets the price range, an interview is advised to be conducted. Throughout this interview these set of questions will come in handy:

  • a. how long have you been in business?
  • b. Does your company carry workers’ compensation and liability insurance?
  • c. Are you bonded?
  • d. What is your experience in renovation and remodeling?
  • e. Who will I be working with on this project?
  • f. What is your building experience?
  • g. What process will you follow to help me throughout this project?
  • h. Will you be handling the discussions with the governmental agencies?

5. Obtain a detailed estimate of the price, or a bid.
